Baku Scene Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, on the Bay of Baku some 92 ft below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world located below sea level. Baku's largest industry is petroleum. By the beginning of the 20th century the Baku oil fields were the largest in the world and by the end of the 20th century much of the onshore petroleum had been exhausted and drilling had to be extended into the Caspian sea offshore. Baku is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Caucasus, with many of the world's leading hotel chains having a presence in the city.

Climate: In Azerbaijan, the climate is slightly continental, with relatively cold winters and hot summers. Baku lies on the coast of the Caspian Sea which tempers the more extreme temperatures. It is actually a windy city: the Khazri (cold northern wind) alternates with the Gilavar (warm wind from the south). Summer is hot and sunny, with highs around 30°C. In the winter months, cold air from the polar region can bring strong winds. The rains are scarce with a maximum in autumn and winter, when they are light but relatively frequent. Summer sees very little rain.
